What is a "portal" anyway?
Well, it depends...
"Portal" is one of
the most overused terms in the web space today.
Sometimes people are referring to a simple web site containing
mainly HTML, other times they are referring to a
web-based application interface that consolidates
information from a number of sources - but quite often that
consolidation is very limited in its scope.
These days the most common
understanding of the term represents a web site that
integrates content, whether application- or
document-based. Often this content is in the form of
HTML or XML. Another key component of portals as most of
us see them is the ability to personalize one's experience
within the site.
At first glance it may seem that there is
considerable overlap between portal solutions and content management. After
all, "content' is a pretty generic term. And confusion arises as to
where control should be allocated for web site design and access. Without
a clear vision and practical methodology, it's easy to get caught in a cycle
of redundant design and implementation work in bringing diverse technologies
together.
